How does it work?

The beginning, the middle and the end

How do we start?

The contact page requests some specific information so that I can get an idea of exactly what services you will need and how best I can work to suit your project. I am happy to provide a 1500 word sample of my work for longer projects (25,000 words and upwards) or a 500 word sample for shorter content, so that you can see whether I am a good fit for your work. I'm also always happy to discuss your specific needs over email, phone or video call if more in-depth discussion is needed

What will it cost?

No two projects are the same. Whether it's a 2000 word short story, a million word fantasy series, or a 150 word blurb for a website. Each project is unique, so while I do offer rates by the hour or according to word count, some projects will be best served by working out a set rate. Hourly rates are recommended by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (shown here https://www.ciep.uk/resources/suggested-minimum-rates/) as the industry standard

What kind of editing do I need?

The level of editing needed depends on what stage your manuscript is at. Substantive editing should be done first, to get the foundations of the story down, however if you have used alpha and beta readers or are an experienced author, you may be able to skip this step. Line-editing and proofreading are done after the major changes have been largely finished, in order for you to get the best results. Editing aims to make sure your work is as polished and marketable as possible before it is published, presented, or otherwise released into the wild

What kind of projects or content do you work on?

Books are the absolute love of my life, and as a reader I especially love romance, fantasy, paranormal, crime, horror, mystery and comedy. Which is . . . a lot of genres. When editing, I specialise in romance, particularly LGBTQIA+ romance. As there are a lot of independent authors writing in that genre, I'm also taking a leaf from the books of some great editors I've seen and offering reduced rates for projects in that genre. That being said, just because it may not be my particular area, doesn't mean I wouldn't be able and happy to work on it with you, so if you aren't sure or want to get more information, feel free to get in touch to discuss your project in more detail

How long will it take?

As with the cost, because every project is different, it can be difficult to say how long each piece of work will take, and often it will depend on scheduling, availability and the nature of the content. If you need the work done quickly then I can often offer faster service for a higher fee, but again, this does depend on my availability. For very complex projects, developmental or substantive editing, or projects where a lot of detail checking is needed, you should expect they will take longer to complete than simpler content
